Mission Statement: To bring the joy of the Holiday Season for families of color in Utah.
Christmas is a magical time of the year. Houses decorated with lights. The hustle and bustle of
shopping. Songs from carolers. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Folks dressed up like eskimos. The smiles on the faces of children when they open gifts from Santa Claus.
For many families, the joy of Christmas fades. Lack of resources. The pandemic. Unemployment and underemployment. Debt from loans, medical bills, overdue mortgage or rent, can render parents and/or guardians unable to provide.
For families of color, these challenges can be exponential and help far and in between. In a recent study by the Kim C Gardner Foundation, 28.7% of black families live below the poverty line. The highest rate of any ethnic minority in Utah. Only 30% of blacks in Utah are homeowners as opposed to 76% of white families.
The largest disparity of any state in the country
At Wishes and Dreams, we help these families regain the joy of Christmas. We work directly with the parents or guardians to identify the Wishes for their family. The Dreams will be delivered the week before Christmas.
